10 Easy Rules to Help You Stay Safe

For information on our privacy policy regarding children under the age of 13, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

  1. When using email, instant message, message boards, comments or any feature that allows you to enter text or talk, never give out personal information, such as your last name, home address, phone number, social security number, or the name and location of your school or favorite place to hangout.
  2. Your username is your member name, which is displayed throughout the site for people to see. Don’t use your last name or hometown in your username. This will keep people you don’t know from finding out more about you.
  3. Your password is your secret. You don’t want to give the scary neighborhood kid who never says “hi” access to your information, right? Of course not! Keep your password safe.
  4. Please read our Privacy Policy.
  5. The Internet is open to anyone. Only upload and add content you don’t mind other people seeing. If you’re not sure whether you should upload or say something, then don’t.
  6. Kids, never agree to meet someone (in public) you met online without first asking your parents. If your parents are cool with it, meet in a public place and bring your mom or dad along.
  7. Don’t respond to any messages that in any way make you feel uncomfortable. It‘s not your fault if you get a message like that. Let us know and we’ll take care of it for you.
  8. If someone sends you something to download, check with your parents. You never want to download anything or install software provided to you from people you don’t know.
  9. If anyone makes you feel unsafe anywhere online, tell someone you trust. Ask them to help you report the event to the Web site or proper authorities.
  10. Finally, display good sportsmanship here and across the Internet. Be an example and don’t do anything that might hurt someone’s feelings.

IS YOUR STUDENT/ATHLETE ON  YourCompletePlayer?

It is important to have an open dialogue about Internet use and online safety with your teens. Experts recommend setting boundaries for Internet usage just like any other medium such as TV or the phone. Ask your teen about how they use the Internet, what social networking sights they have joined and who they connect with while on online. Let your teen know that you are interested in seeing their YourCompletePlayer profile and who their top friends are.

You can also search for your teen on YourCompletePlayer using our search functionalities. Simply enter in their first and last name (or their email address) and review the search results to see if your teen is on the site.

Discuss appropriate online etiquette. For example, tell them that if they wouldn't say something to the person's face because it's too mean, it's probably not okay to say it online. Make sure your teens know appropriate online behavior and how to end a conversation they don't like.
  • Just as you ask your kids about where they go and who they're with after school, ask them which Web sites they visit and who they chat with online.
  • Assure your teens that if they tell you about something that happened online, you will work with them to resolve the issue without taking away their Internet privileges.
    • For more information and resources about how to talk to your kids about cyberbullying, please visit the following sites:

        3. Talk About YourCompletePlayer and the Internet
        • YourCompletePlayer, like the rest of the online world, is a public space. Members shouldn't post anything they wouldn't want the world to know (e.g., phone number, address, IM screen name, or specific whereabouts). Tell your teens they should avoid posting anything that would make it easy for a stranger to find them, such as their local hangouts.
        • Remind them not to post anything that could embarrass them in the future or expose them to danger. Although YourCompletePlayer is public, teens sometimes forget that the information and photos they post are accessible to others.
        4. Remind Teens to Be Cautious
        • Just as in the offline world, people aren't always who they say they are. Remind your teens to be careful about adding strangers to their friends list. It's fun to connect with new YourCompletePlayer friends from all over the world, but members should be cautious when communicating with people they don't know.
        • Encourage teens to be themselves, but to exercise the same basic safety principles they do in the physical world. They wouldn't chat with a stranger at the mall or give someone they don't know their cell phone number. Remind them that reckless online behavior can be just as dangerous.
        • They should talk to you if they want to meet an online friend in person, and if you think it's safe, any meeting should take place in public, with friends or a trusted adult present.
